Mark Ronson on how going through the pain of divorce has led to his best music yet

Mark Ronson’s work is inescapable.

‘Uptown Funk’ has racked up 3.5 billion YouTube hits (chances are you’re responsible for at least one or two of them). Or maybe you were more into his recent single with Miley Cyrus — ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’ — which has had 332 million worldwide streams. And, if pop’s not your thing, he’s also produced albums for Rufus Wainwright, Paul McCartney, The Black Lips, Queens of the Stone Age — and let’s not forget working with Adele and Amy Winehouse’s groundbreaking Back to Black.

When we meet, in the privacy of his publicist’s office in London, Ronson is dressed in loose black Gucci trousers, plain canvas Converse high tops and a weathered grey T-shirt — the typically low-key uniform of the super-successful. The 43-year-old producer, songwriter and DJ has won seven Grammys, two Brits and, most recently, an Oscar for ‘Shallow’ — a song he co-wrote with Lady Gaga in just four hours for the movie A Star is Born. Raised in New York, but born here in London (St John’s Wood, to be precise) and currently in residence in LA, Ronson is surprisingly tall and gangly in person.
